27th March 2018

The RSA New Contemporaries showcase excellence in Scottish contemporary art.

Fiona Steel was a recent graduate of Edinburgh College of Art, that caught my eye, with her black and white digital prints exploring the outdoors and the aesthetic nature of immersing yourself in being lost.

The locations of the images are rarely random. They are site specific places that Steel visits multiple times over extended periods. This is to gain an intimate understanding of the land.

‘Little, If Anything To Be Seen’ according to Steel “explores a land haunted by it’s past. To walk here is a solitary experience where others are rarely witnessed. However, the presence of the other is always evident.”

Like my own work, the locations are places that I have visited multiple times, with the intentions to locate the perfect image.

I want to continue this inspired by Steel’s intimacy with her surroundings creatings an abject, yet astounding image.
