NOW

Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art

27th March 2018

NOW was an exhibition featuring artists Jenny Savile, Sara Barker, Christine Borland, Robin Rhode, Markus Schinwald and Catherine Street.

‘Red Stare Head IV’ (2006-2011) by Jenny Saville above draws upon a wide range of sources found in most of Saville’s work, including graffiti, online images and children’s drawings. The large scale of Saville’s paintings really bring to life the gruesome flesh-y tones in the paintings and capture a sense of motion and fluidity.

Saville’s work, to me, distorts the socially accepted representations of the body within the media. This aspect of her work really intrigues me.

Within my own work, I want to challenge the socially accepted way that we (as a society) deal with mental health: particularly isolation, alienation and depression.
